"The Financier" -- a member of the class of
1862 at University of Pennsylvania; with 1st Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry he
was at the Battle of Gettysburg. An orderly, he lent his horse to Major
Haller, officer in command, and rode a farm wagon for the remainder of the
battle. He raised investments in Europe for railroads in the US. He served on the
Board of Mangers of the Reading Railroad. With A. J. Drexel and J.P.
Morgan he organized a pivotal anthracite transaction. In the late1880s he dec
lined an invitation to join the Drexel-Morgan firm. (JP and his father, Junius
were relieved, as they thought Welsh not their kind of team player). In
Philadelphia he organized and was president of the Union Traction Company.
