Anne West Strawbridge lived from 1883 to 1941. Born in Philadephia to Dr. George Strawbridge and Alice Welsh Strawbridge, she never married. She was an artist, author, and mountain climber, among other activities. She also flew an autogiro, an aircraft that was popular in the 1930s that had attributes of both an airplane and a helicopter, as seen below in the gallery of images. A good deal of information about her is included in my mother’s recollections of times at the Strawbridges’ home, called “The Wilderness,” in Philadelphia.
