John Welsh, born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1805, first married Rebecca Bass Miller in 1829, but she died in 1832. In 1838, he married Mary Lowber. She was born February 5, 1816, and died October 25, 1852, in England. John Welsh was a successful merchant and, in 1876, he was a chief executive for the Centennial Commission, which produced the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.
In 1877, he was appointed by President Hayes to be the Minister to England, a post he held for two years. He died in 1886.
